Cecile Richards Discusses “Women, Sex and Health Care” at Wellesley College
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Young people are “the future of women’s health in the 21st century"
WELLESLEY — On Tuesday evening, Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), addressed a crowd of Wellesley College students, staff, and faculty and members of the greater Boston community. In a speech titled “Women, Sex and Health Care – Hope for the 21st Century,” Richards outlined how domestic and global advances in women’s health care have created paths to success for generations of women. She further outlined a vision for how women’s health advocates in the U.S. and around the world will continue their work in the 21st century.
“We have made incredible progress in women’s health and reproductive rights across the globe over the past several decades,” Richards said. “But as recent attacks on women’s health here at home have shown, we still have work to do. When I speak with students and advocates at places like Wellesley, I know I am looking at the future of women’s health in the 21st century. Together, we will continue advancing access to health care and women’s rights across the globe.”
Richards has led PPFA as well as the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, its 501(c)(4) advocacy and political arm, since 2006. She has expanded PPFA’s advocacy for access to health care both in the U.S. and globally, ensuring that Planned Parenthood plays a pivotal role in shaping health care coverage and services for women.
Marty Walz, who started as President and CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts last Monday, March 4, introduced Richards and gave brief remarks.
“It was an honor to introduce Cecile, who has done so much to build a healthier and safer world for women and teens,” said Walz. “Her inspiring words and fearless leadership motivate all of us at Planned Parenthood on a daily basis – and she motivated the Wellesley community last night to keep working to expand health care access and opportunity for women in our local communities and beyond.”
Supporters filled the Diana Chapman Walsh Alumnae Hall Auditorium at Wellesley College for this free and public event presented by the Wellesley Centers for Women and the Center for Work & Service at Wellesley College.
