Comprehensive sexuality education curriculum Get Real is recognized
PORTLAND, OR— Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts’ (PPLM’s) leadership and their community education programs were recently honored at the Planned Parenthood National Conference in Portland, OR for their outstanding work in the field of sexuality education. PPLM provides school-based curriculum, parent education, and professional training across the Commonwealth.
The Association of Planned Parenthood Leaders in Education (APPLE) Tree Award was awarded to the Board of Directors and Dianne Luby, President/CEO, of PPLM for outstanding leadership in education. The Affiliate Excellence Award in Community Education was awarded to PPLM for its comprehensive sexuality education program, Get Real: Comprehensive Sex Education that Works.
Get Real is designed for middle and high school aged youth and incorporates teacher training and curriculum implementation as well as family activities. PPLM has trained 189 teachers at 120 schools in Get Real implementation and has reached over 32,000 students. Preliminary findings from the first year of a third-party evaluation conducted by Wellesley Centers for Women show that students enrolled in Get Real were 30% less likely to report that they had sex than students who didn’t have Get Real.
PPLM’s education programs also include Let’s Be Honest, a parent education program that offers workshops through a variety of venues to engage parents as the primary sexuality educators of their children. The Seamos Honestos parent education program is offered in Spanish in Western Massachusetts. PPLM also provides a professional training program designed to help educators, social workers, and other professionals who work with youth to develop the skills and awareness it takes to be effective sexuality educators.
The APPLE Tree Award was awarded to PPLM’s President and Board of Directors for the critical role that the Education department plays in PPLM’s strategic goal to make Sexual Health Matter. Each of these awards are a direct acknowledgement of the commitment made by PPLM and its leadership to keep Massachusetts communities healthy through face-to-face work with youth, parents, schools and various professionals.
