Statement on Police Reform and Accountability Bill Becoming Law
For Immediate Release: June 12, 2020
Des Moines, IA— Today, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a police accountability and law enforcement reform bill, HF 2647, into law. The bill is the result of the efforts of Iowa's Black leaders and community, bolstered by public demands for change. Below is a statement from Erin Davison-Rippey, Iowa Executive Director for Planned Parenthood North Central States:
“Iowa made remarkable progress last night, thanks to the Iowa Legislative Black Caucus and organizers for Black Lives Matter Des Moines, along with Black, Indigenous and people of color leading organizations across Iowa—and the Iowans who showed up in the streets to demand justice. This rapid progress is a testament to the power of people to drive change, particularly when we follow the lead of our Black communities. We have much more to do and we are hopeful that we are on a collective path to a more just future. Black lives matter, and it’s on all of us to dismantle systems of oppression and systemic racism so that our demands for equality become reality.”
