This Black Maternal Health Week (April 11th–17th), an initiative spearheaded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), we join patients, providers, and advocates across the country in lifting the need for maternal health research and care that centers Black women.
As described by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Black Maternal Health Week works to do the following:
- Deepen the national conversation about Black maternal health in the US;
- Amplify community-driven policy, research, and care solutions;
- Center the voices of Black mamas, women, families, and stakeholders;
- Provide a national platform for Black-led entities and efforts on maternal health, birth, and reproductive justice; and
- Enhance community organizing on Black maternal health.
Maternal mortality rates have reached critical levels in New Jersey, and the broader United States. Racial disparities in care have led to Black women dying from pregnancy-related complications at 3 to 4 times the rate of white women.
There is no singular reason for the decisive increase in maternal mortality nationally, or in Black communities specifically. The maternal mortality rate for Black women in the U.S. cuts across age, education, and income level – making it critical that researchers take a closer look at the role of racism and discrimination in harming maternal health.
At PPNCSNJ, we are committed to uplifting the work of reproductive justice organizations focusing on increasing health equity for Black women and families. We will continue to fight back against racial bias and disparities in the quality of care for Black people.
