Planned Parenthood of Northern New England Promotes Screenings for National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Williston (VT) - Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) is urging women to talk with their health care providers about cervical cancer this month as the country observes National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
One in 145 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer during their lifetime. Cervical cancer can be successfully treated when it is discovered in its earliest stages with a test called a Pap test, sometimes called Pap “smear.” PPNNE provides Pap tests and annual exams to women. Our services are available at low-cost and on a sliding fee scale for those who do not have insurance.
“Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, and women should talk with their doctors or other health care providers about the best ways to stay safe,” said Cheryl Gibson, Medical Director for PPNNE. “Thanks to innovations like the HPV vaccine, we are at a critical juncture in the fight against cervical cancer. The work we do today to prevent cervical cancer will help keep future generations safe,” added Gibson.
The quickest paths to eliminating this disease are regular cervical cancer screenings, consistent and correct condom use, and HPV vaccination, Gardasil, for women who have not yet been exposed to human papilloma virus (HPV). PPNNE is one of the largest cervical cancer screening organizations in northern New England, offering both Pap and HPV testing as well as HPV immunizations. 95% of the services PPNNE provides are preventive.
