Statement by PPNNE in Opposition to Dietary Supplements Tax
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Montpelier (VT) - "My name is Jill Krowinski and I am the Director of Communications for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. Planned Parenthood has 13 health centers and serves 23,000 patients in Vermont. 95% of the work we do is preventative and that is why we strongly oppose taxing dietary supplements, which would include prenatal vitamins.
PPNNE recommends and prescribes vitamins to our patients. It is especially important for women who are thinking about becoming pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Prenatal vitamins help with tissue growth and development. They also reduce the risk of having birth defects of the brain or the spine.
PPNNE has a special concern for low income women who have trouble paying for their prenatal vitamins now, this would be an extra financial burden. The vitamin tax is a step backwards in making health care more affordable. PPNNE strongly urges legislators to oppose this burden on women and families."
