When it comes to getting a sense of what’s “normal” in terms of physical appearance these days, the struggle is real. With Photoshop, plastic surgery and a ridiculous weight standard, it’s easy to have unrealistic expectations about what “real” is.
Last year, celebrities and everyday people used social media more than ever to try and shift the conversation. Whether it was to call out cyber bullies or show imperfections, these body acceptance influencers deserve more than lots of likes.
Lena Dunham is a positive body image rock star. Her wild popularity hasn’t changed her weight or her opinion about it. Lena’s Instagram account is a great mix of flattering, dolled-up pics and unedited body shots—we love it all!
Selena Gomez recently fired back after being called fat in a paparazzi photo with this gorgeous bikini pic captioned, “I love being happy with me ya’ll #theresmoretolove”.
Women’s Health Magazine surveyed readers and were inspired by the words they liked (toned, strong, sexy) and slightly ashamed about the ones they didn’t (shrink, diet). They made it their new year’s resolution to officially cut “bikini body” and “lose two inches” from their editorial vocabulary.
Chrissy Teigen is another celeb who isn’t afraid to keep it real on social media. The model and mom-to-be posts about her love of food, growing thighs, and even gave a shout-out to her “stretchies”.
Zooey Deschanel told Cosmopolitan last year that she wouldn’t be posing for any “body after baby” photos. She explained, “Haven’t we all seen those pictures of a sexy new mom in a bikini after one month?” she said in the interview. “I will not be that person. I’ve always gone my own course and never been someone who had the need to be super skinny. I like a healthy look. I don’t buy into that skinny-is-better mentality.”
These ladies and their no-shame attitudes inspire us to be healthy, proud and to maybe even cut the diet instead of the calories this year. Instead of a new year, new you attitude in 2016, we much prefer new year, new outlook on you.
Which celebrities inspire you to be healthy?
