One of the biggest losses during this COVID-19 pandemic has been the loss of intimacy. Small, warm gestures we might take for granted — like hugs — are discouraged. Sex — one of the most intimate of acts — has become unthinkable for many, especially when it’s sex with a new person whose COVID status is unknown.
And then there’s the boredom. With our recreation options limited, we seek novelty, and/or pleasure, to pass the time.
Make a Date With Yourself
So self love is back! For many of us, it never left. But if there were ever a historical moment that was suited to masturbation, it’s this one.
Masturbation is a safe way to satisfy your sexual desires, and the variety of toys and accessories to enhance it is nearly infinite.
Accessorize!
One of our local sex toy and accessory shops, Pleasures and Treasures, has been in business in San Diego for 16 years — 11 of those years in the North Park neighborhood.
I reached out to store manager, Steve, to give us some sex toy 411.
During the pandemic, they’ve seen a substantial increase in sales of all adult toys, beginning in April of last year. I asked what types of toys are selling well.
“For [people with a vulva], the best-selling toys have always been and still currently are any type of vibrator,” said Steve. “The best-selling masturbation toys for [people with a penis] have been strokers — any type of silicone stroker has been selling well.”
Even if you’re masturbating solo, it’s important to keep your toys clean for your own sexual health.
“It is recommended that you use antibacterial soap and hot water,” Steve said. (There are also anti-bacterial sprays available, and certain types of silicone toys require different cleansers.)
Don’t Be Shy...Explore More
As you might imagine, the store staff is experienced with every type of question.
“We are always very welcoming and discreet when answering questions for our customers,” Steve said. “We have a relaxed atmosphere and our staff is knowledgeable with products and how they can help most people’s issues.
We pride ourselves on educating our customers about the products they are purchasing and helping them with their sexual health questions.”
The pandemic is impacting all aspects of our lives, but it doesn’t have to mean that pleasure, joy, and intimacy are gone. Take time to love yourself as fully and intimately as you desire.
