So it’s time for your very first visit to Planned Parenthood. No need to worry! We’re looking out for you. And we’ve made this list of 10 things to know about Planned Parenthood and about using our services:
1. We respect your privacy.
We will never tell a parent/guardian/partner/friend anything about your visit unless you ask us to. We will also never confirm that you are a patient with us. Your time here is personal and private (but note that we are mandated reporters, so we may have to report abuse or unsafe situations).
2. We will not judge you.
Even the things you may feel are embarrassing or difficult questions or concerns will be addressed with no judgments, just care.
3. This is a safe place to be you, and to talk about sexuality.
We honor and respect you — including your gender identity and expression, and your romantic/sexual relationships. We will use your chosen name and correct pronouns.
4. Ask us ANYTHING!
We’ve heard every question about sex, birth control, and people’s bodies. If you are confused or concerned, we are the experts and we’re here to answer your questions!
5. It’s ok to just come in and talk.
We will never pressure anyone to have an exam or take a test that they don’t want to. Your care is tailored to you. If you only want to talk, that’s fine with us!
6. You don’t need an exam to get tested, or to get birth control.
Despite what you may have heard, you don’t need an exam to get these services.
7. We see men, too.
Lots of folks think that Planned Parenthood is just for women, but it’s not! So if you identify as male, come on in…or bring in a male partner/friend to get tested, too.
8. If your appointment is during school, then we can give you a doctor’s note.
The state of California recognizes minors have the right to access reproductive and sexual health services. You don’t need a parent or guardian to be seen.
9. We have a great funding program called Family PACT, and many of our patients qualify.
It’s easy to fill out the form and it takes just minutes to be approved! You’ll fill out the form when you check in for your appointment. If approved, the program pays for almost any service you request — including a year’s supply of birth control, STD testing, and condoms. And you can use Family PACT if you don’t want to use your parents’ or partner’s health insurance for confidentiality reasons.
10. You should be tested, even if you don’t have symptoms.
The most common symptom of an STD is no symptom.
Bring your school ID card, have a confidential phone number for contact, and make sure you know your home address. We have 18 health centers in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties — and every one of them will take good care of you.
You can go to www.planned.org to make your appointment online, or call us at 1-888-743-7526 (PLAN).
