This year, on Glamour Magazine’s 25th anniversary of the award, our very own Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, was named Woman of the Year. She is one of eight honorees and was recognized alongside Victoria Beckham, Caitlyn Jenner, Reese Witherspoon, the U.S. women’s national soccer team and more.
This is a significant honor for Cecile, Planned Parenthood and the entire women’s health movement. It is a reflection of the role Planned Parenthood plays in the fabric of this country, a testament to the phenomenal work that affiliates, providers, and volunteers do every day, and a tribute to Cecile’s extraordinary leadership.
Fellow Woman of the Year (2012), Lena Dunham, explained why she believes this recognition is well deserved, “[Cecile] is fighting for each and every one of us. I would follow her into a burning building and still not be half as brave as she is.”
Every year Glamour magazine recognizes a group of women who’ve taken bold steps to accomplish extraordinary things. The award ceremony began in 1990 and has since honored almost 400 women pioneers including Laverne Cox, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Madeleine Albright and Ruth Bader Ginsburg—just to name a few.
