Civil rights activist Dolores Huerta recently took to her blog, featured on the Huffington Post, to voice her strong support for the essential services Planned Parenthood provides – especially for Latinos, who make up 22 percent of patients who receive our services.
“To put it simply: Attacking Planned Parenthood for providing Latinas with reproductive health services is another way of saying that Latinas shouldn’t have access to reproductive health services at all,” Huerta says in her post.
Huerta is an advocate for health care access for low-income families of color, and she has also done extensive advocacy for workers’ (like the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez), immigrants’ and women’s rights.
She is no stranger to the reproductive health disparities of women, particularly in terms of Latinas, who are disproportionately uninsured and at higher risk of death from cervical or breast cancer.
She goes on to praise Planned Parenthood for its extensive work in communities of color, affording Latina women control over their health and future, and being there when women have nowhere else to turn.
Thank you, Dolores, for being such a fierce supporter of women’s rights and for continuously advocating for organizations like Planned Parenthood. We’re honored to have you on our side.
