BuzzFeed found a hilarious way to poke fun at abstinence-only sex ed in this video: If We Taught Kids To Drive Like We Teach Sex Ed.
Coach Harrison, also the school’s gym teacher, begins with the one thing he wants students to take away from driver’s ed: “Don’t drive”, he commands, “If you have to drive, wear a seatbelt. But don’t drive.”
Buzzfeed not only succeeded in making us laugh (yet again) but showed us just how misguided abstinence-only sex ed can be. Not only is it misguided, but it creates unnecessary confusion, shame and a lack of much-needed information.
The good news is there are programs (like Planned Parenthood’s) that work to help educators, social workers and other professionals like Coach Harrison to develop the skills and awareness needed to be effective sexuality educators.
Not to mention, comprehensive sexuality education can help people like the teens in this video develop a positive view of sexuality, provide them with information and skills to take charge of their reproductive health, and acquire the skills to make responsible decisions. At the end of the day, everyone is better off.
