Justice Ginsburg was a longtime women’s rights trailblazer and a champion of reproductive freedom. She has been an architect of the legal fights protecting and advancing human rights across the nation, and will be remembered for her service, dedication to reproductive rights, and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights for generations to come. Planned Parenthood mourns this loss. Our country is better because of her.
Her friend and colleague, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, shared, "Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice."
The second woman named to the Supreme Court never wavered in upholding and advancing women's constitutional rights, including abortion, and we will do everything in our power to ensure her legacy is honored. We are at a pivotal moment for our country as we face the relentless global pandemic, severe economic downturn, mounting threats to abortion access across the country, and the most consequential election in recent memory. We must fight to honor Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and to define as clearly as possible what is at stake with this new vacancy: the future of women’s constitutional rights, including the right to abortion.
Justice Ginsburg was surrounded by her family at home in Washington, D.C. when she died due to complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer. She had previously survived five bouts of cancer throughout her life. She was 87 years old.
