Of those in the U.S. who are infected with the HIV virus, one in eight people don’t know they have it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
We encourage everyone to get tested in order to keep yourself and your partners as healthy as possible.
You can visit a Planned Parenthood health center and get a rapid HIV test. It’s quick and easy: We just swab the inside of your cheek and you’ll get your results within 20 minutes. Plus, we’ll give you free condoms every time you visit!
People who do test positively for HIV can take ongoing medication that will keep them healthy and greatly reduce the risk of exposing their partners to the virus.
People who test negatively but are at high risk of contracting HIV can now reduce that risk with medication regimens called nPEP and PrEP:
nPEP
After you are exposed, you can take this medication regimen within 72 hours of exposure to reduce your risk of getting HIV.
PrEP
If you are at high risk of getting HIV, you can take PrEP on an ongoing basis to reduce your risk of contracting the virus.
Be safe out there and get tested! To learn more about PEP and PrEP, go to: http://planned.org/PrEP
