Today is International Pronouns Day (IPD). The goal of the day is to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace.
It is important to address every person with respect and to use their chosen name and pronouns. Using the wrong pronouns can make someone feel excluded and alienated, and particularly impacts trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people. Intentional or repeated use of the wrong pronouns can impact someone’s sense of safety, comfort, and wellbeing.
In fact, recent research finds that referring to people in the ways they wish to be referred to can have positive health outcomes and reduce mental health risks. At Planned Parenthood, we respect and welcome all people and provide compassionate and high-quality care to all, regardless of gender identity or expression.
Using the correct pronouns and allowing people to self-identify is an important step in acknowledging the humanity of all people, especially for trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people, who often face stigma and harassment for being themselves. This is just one important part of creating and sustaining inclusive and supportive communities for everyone.
Together, we can transform society to celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities. This year’s campaign’s hashtag is #PronounsDay. The event’s website includes ideas and tools for participating, answers to common questions, and other helpful resources.
