More than 50 years ago, a Proclamation by President Lyndon Johnson, launched a week-long celebration of the contributions of Latinx people to America’s national heritage. Since then, the celebration has grown and each year from September 15 - October 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Latinx communities.
This year, Planned Parenthood is celebrating this month as Latinx Heritage Month and is recommitting to supporting Latinx patients, staff, volunteers, and supporters as we work to improve sexual and reproductive health among Latinx communities. In celebration, we thank all our current and past Latinx staff, patients, and supporters for their contributions to building a stronger and more diverse movement for health equity.
As we reflect on the many contributions of Latinx people to our country, we pay tribute to the generations of Latinx leaders whose shoulders we stand on. This month, we reaffirm our commitment to expand efforts to improve sexual and reproductive health for all, provide comprehensive sex education, and continue to combat efforts to roll back our rights.
Planned Parenthood’s 2021 Latinx Heritage Month theme is Te valoramos. Te celebramos. Estamos contigo. We see you. We celebrate you. We’re here with you. As we reflect on the past year and the ongoing pandemic, we’re inspired by all the leadership, innovative work, and commitment by the Latinx community to create a world where access to health care doesn’t depend on who you are or where you live.
