Throughout history, LGBTQ+ communities have shown the power of resistance. The 1969 Stonewall Riots — which were led in part by transgender women of color and sparked the modern LGBTQ+ movement — demonstrated the change that can come from solidarity, protest, and pride. Planned Parenthood honors the power and resilience of LGBTQ+ communities who continue to face attacks on their bodily autonomy, access to health care, and humanity. Despite the strides made toward equality in the more than 50 years since the 1969 Stonewall Riots, LGBTQ+ people — especially those who are transgender, people of color, or both — continue to be denied access to basic needs such as housing, health care, and employment.
We know that the fights for LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, and racial justice are inextricably linked. This Pride Month, and always, Planned Parenthood stands in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives, and the movement to #StopAsianHate, which include Black and AAPI LGBTQ+ people, whose health and lives are at higher risk. To dismantle systemic racism, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, we must take action in solidarity with those demanding change. This June, Planned Parenthood redoubles our commitment to building a world in which everyone can access basic human rights — including health care — and live free from violence or discrimination.
We invite you to join Planned Parenthood in supporting the calls to action from organizations working on efforts to combat police brutality and violence against LGBTQ+ people, and to provide much-needed resources — including Center for Black Equity, Movement for Black Lives, Sylvia Rivera Law Project, TransLatin@ Coalition, and Casa Arcoiris.
LGBTQ+ people are Planned Parenthood patients, staff, supporters, and community. We support you. We care for you.
Planned Parenthood works to build a world where LGBTQ+ communities can thrive, free from oppression and discrimination.
