The rate of sexually transmitted diseases in California is the highest it’s been since 1995, according to a new report from the California Department of Public Health, which tracks STD rates.
“More than 300,000 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis were reported: a 45 percent increase compared to five years ago,” according to the report.
STDs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of vision, hearing and other neurologic problems.
These numbers are scary. But don’t get scared – get tested.
Planned Parenthood has 17 health centers in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties where you can receive testing and treatment for these STDs.
Here are the three things you should know to keep yourself healthy:
- The majority of STDs are diagnosed in people under 30. If you are under 30, make sure you follow up with your health care provider to assess your risk factors for STDs. The CDC recommends women under 25 are screened annually. Planned Parenthood screens all of our patients annually for STDs.
- Most people with an STD don’t know they have one. Many STDs show no symptoms. The only way to know if you have an STD is to get tested.
- Once diagnosed, all STDs can be treated and many can be cured.
