With Justice Kennedy’s retirement from the Supreme Court, our right to safe and legal abortion is on the line.
The new Supreme Court appointee and the makeup of the Court will determine the course of our history — the course of countless women’s lives.
They will decide whether our government trusts women to make their own decisions about their own bodies.
For the past year, the Trump-Pence administration has been pushing policies that take away the rights of people of color, LGBTQ people, and women. Since taking office, this administration has:
- Allowed employers to deny birth control coverage to their employees
- Cut teen pregnancy prevention programs
- Taken away protections for sexual assault survivors
- Tried to block women from getting care at Planned Parenthood
- Promoted abstinence-only programs
We cannot allow our daughters and granddaughters to have fewer rights than we do. The majority of American women were born after Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. The legal right to control their bodies and make decisions about whether and when to become a parent is something they have known their entire lives.
And now, the Court may try to take those rights away – especially from people who still face daily barriers to health care: young people, women of color, those who live in rural areas, and people with low incomes.
Planned Parenthood has been here for more than 100 years. We’ve seen women fight hard and win their rights to access basic reproductive health care over the last generation. But those rights could disappear if we don’t stop extreme judges from being appointed to our highest court. Progress is not guaranteed; it’s achieved.
More than seventy percent of Americans support access to abortion. In the last 18 months, millions of people have marched and flooded town halls and the halls of Congress. Countless voices have been raised to demand our rights.
And if they were fired up before, you’d better believe they are super-charged now.
