Juneteenth is the day in history when Black enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that the lawful era of slavery had ended.
The Emancipation Proclamation stated that slavery ended on January 1, 1863. Unfortunately, the news did not reach Galveston, Texas until June 19, 1865. This meant that many people remained enslaved for over 2 and a half years longer than those in other states.
