First, Jennifer Lawrence took a fierce stance on equal pay, writing a powerful essay, which made an appearance in Lena Dunham’s newsletter Lenny that tackled the income disparities women face in the workforce. Now, she’s taken a vocal stand against the attacks on Planned Parenthood during an interview with Glamour magazine.
“It isn’t an attack on abortions; it’s an attack on women. Because Planned Parenthood is so much more than abortion,” said Jennifer to Glamour editor-in-chief.
Sigh…Need we say more about how amazing this feminist powerhouse is? She isn’t one to shy away from hot button issues like reproductive rights, and we’re fangirling all over the place for her. Get it, girl!
On a more serious note, the fact of the matter is Jennifer is absolutely right. Abortion is a small and important part of what we do. In fact, more than 95 percent of the services Planned Parenthood affiliates provide are made up of birth control, STI testing and treatment, and lifesaving cancer screening and prevention.
“What harm comes from supplying people with birth control, condoms, Pap smears, and cancer screenings,” adds Jennifer.
Hear, hear! We couldn’t agree more. After all, no organization does more than Planned Parenthood to prevent unintended pregnancy. From 2014 to 2015 alone, Planned Parenthood affiliates provided 2,945,059 birth control information and services, 635,342 Pap tests and breast exams and 4,218,149 STI tests and treatment.
“I wouldn’t have been able to get birth control if it weren’t for Planned Parenthood,” said Jennifer.
“Now I am a successful woman who has not had a pregnancy.”
And Jennifer isn’t the only one. From 2014 to 2015, the contraceptive services provided by Planned Parenthood affiliates averted 578,681 unintended pregnancies.
Thanks for the shout out, Jennifer. We love you too!
