San Diego, CA - June 24, 2023 marks the one-year anniversary of the detrimental Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
Below is a statement from Dr. Antoinette Marengo, Chief Medical Officer at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest:
“On the one year anniversary of the detrimental Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, we honor the millions of people across the country who are no longer able to exercise their right to bodily autonomy. In stripping the federal constitutional right to safe and legal abortion, SCOTUS took away our right to make our own personal medical decisions. While we acknowledge the impact that this ruling has had in one year alone, its repercussions are pervasive, long-lasting and incessantly harmful.
We find ourselves in a time when our basic human rights are being challenged like never before – when exercising your right to bodily autonomy depends on your zip code, when trans people’s very existence is being attacked, and when doctors need to fear prosecution simply for providing life-saving care.
Our vision at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest is simple – to help build a world where every person has the opportunity to choose their own path to a healthy and meaningful life. Today, and every day, we are working to ensure that every patient who seeks safe and stigma-free abortion care can access the health care they need.
Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest is focused on getting care to patients and patients to care: We’ve doubled down on our efforts to expand access to abortion care and invest in patient navigation efforts to help people seeking abortion overcome logistical barriers — providing transportation and travel support, financial assistance, and referrals for those that need to travel to access the critical health care they need.
This work is crucial, not only for the communities in our three-county region, but for people across the country. Together with our reproductive health, rights, and justice partners, Planned Parenthood is committed to building a just world that includes nationwide access to sexual and reproductive health for all — no matter what.”
