Celebrating and Protecting the Right to Birth Control
For Immediate Release: June 4, 2014
Supporters rally outside the Supreme Court
June 7th marks the 49th anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, the historic 1965 Supreme Court decision legalizing the use of contraception by married couples. The anniversary comes as the Supreme Court is set to decide Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby later this month. This case considers whether employers can deny their employees birth control coverage based solely on their own personal beliefs.
Access to birth control is critical for women's basic preventive health care, for our ability to plan our families, and for expanding economic opportunities. "It's amazing that in 2014 there's still a fight going on in this country over whether women should have access to birth control, and we are working to ensure that they do," said Lillian Tamayo, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast. Planned Parenthood continues to work tirelessly to protect access to birth control with no co-pay. Read more on Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby in our recent op-ed in the Palm Beach Post.
