Planned Parenthood Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Lillian Tamayo, President/CEO, on Women’s Equality Day
For Immediate Release: May 19, 2014
(Miami) Today as the nation observes Women’s Equality Day on August 26th, Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast, Inc. (PPSFTC) is also celebrating Lillian A. Tamayo’s tenth anniversary as President/CEO of the largest affiliate in the state.
Under Lillian’s leadership, PPSFTC has grown from a small storefront office offering just pregnancy testing and counseling services to ten health centers serving an eight county region with a population size larger than 32 other states. During Lillian’s ten year tenure, the affiliate has grown from a budget of $1.8 million to $10 million, from $600,000 in grant revenue to more than $3.5 million, and from thirty staff members to over one hundred. Through innovative education and outreach programs such as La Promesa, Planned Parenthood also increased Hispanic access to reproductive health care in Palm Beach County by more than 130 percent and by more than 53 percent in Miami-Dade County.
The affiliate has also achieved the highest four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent charity evaluator, for six consecutive years under Lillian’s leadership. Receiving four out of a possible four stars from Charity Navigator indicates that an organization excels, as compared to other charities in America, in successfully managing the finances of the organization in an efficient manner. Only 2 percent of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least 6 consecutive 4-star evaluations.
“It is a privilege to work for an organization which defends simple, core human values, the right to self determination, the right to decide when and if one will become a parent, the right to define one's own family, and the right to love,” said President Lillian Tamayo. “The opportunity to translate these principles into action by assuring America's men, women, and teens have access to reproductive health care and education is the centerpiece of Planned Parenthood's legacy and, truly, my great honor."
Ms. Tamayo currently serves on the Board of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). In 2006, Ms. Tamayo received the ACLU Foundation of Florida’s Nelson Poynter Award which is presented to an individual who has made a major contribution to the cause of civil liberties in Florida. Ms. Tamayo was nominated by the Democratic National Committee Chairman, Howard Dean, to serve as a Party Leader and Elected Official member of the Platform Committee for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. In 2009, Ms. Tamayo received the Ruth Green Award bestowed by the PPFA Affiliate Chief Executives Council for lifetime achievement in Planned Parenthood executive leadership. A native of Cuba, Ms. Tamayo lived in New Jersey and Connecticut prior to relocating to South Florida in 1999.
