Planned Parenthood Welcomes Rabbi Judith Siegal to Board of Directors
For Immediate Release: May 19, 2014
(Miami)—Rabbi Judith Siegal of Temple Judea in Coral Gables has joined the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast.
Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast provides comprehensive sexual health care through clinical services, education and advocacy. The affiliate is the largest in the state of Florida, serving eight counties including Broward, Indian River, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and St. Lucie.
“We are thrilled Rabbi Siegal has joined Planned Parenthood’s Board of Directors,” said Lillian A. Tamayo, President/CEO of Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast. “Planned Parenthood has a long history of collaborating with faith leaders to help women, teens and families make informed choices and lead healthy lives.”
In her new role as a board member, Rabbi Siegal is helping Planned Parenthood launch an Interfaith Council in Miami-Dade County to provide a community setting for faith leaders and lay leaders within faith organizations to increase their knowledge and comfort with sexual and reproductive health issues. The Interfaith Council provides trainings to help faith leaders offer sexual health education for the adults and youth in their community as well as advocate for the right of women and men to make informed, morally responsible choices about their reproductive lives.
“I am honored and proud to be on the board for Planned Parenthood. Judaism teaches that preserving life is the highest value and I believe that Planned Parenthood does exactly that – preserves lives,” said Rabbi Siegal. “I want the children of this community to grow up well informed and educated about sexuality, so that boys and girls have the freedom and knowledge to act responsibly, care for their bodies and each other and make sacred choices about their own bodies and futures.”
Rabbi Siegal was ordained from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York in May 2006 with a Masters in Hebrew Literature. During her rabbinical training, she served a variety of communities, including the NYU Bronfman Center Hillel for two years, Chavurat Tikvah (a group of families meeting in each others’ homes for worship, study, and celebration), and Woodlands Community Temple in Ardsley, New York. Prior to rabbinical school, she received a Master’s degree in Social Work and holds a B.A. in English from University of Texas, Austin.
