For Immediate Release: May 19, 2014
Sold-out event raises more than $425,000 for Planned Parenthood of Southern New England at Annual Spring Luncheon event at the Stamford Marriott Hotel in Stamford, Conn.
(New Haven, Conn.) – On Wednesday, April 9, 2014, Planned Parenthood of Southern New England (PPSNE) hosted its Annual Spring Luncheon at the Stamford Marriott Hotel in Stamford, Conn. More than $425,000 was raised at the signature fundraiser event that was attended by nearly 560 PPSNE friends, advocates and supporters.
Sarah Weddington, attorney, law professor, and former Texas state legislator, was more than the benefit’s profound keynote speaker. She was an inspiration to the guests, who were honored to be in her presence; and she personally greeted many attendees with a hug and a genuine smile.
Weddington, a champion of women’s rights, is best known for successfully arguing the landmark case Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States in 1973. She regaled the audience with tales from her experience trying Roe v. Wade; the time she spent as an adviser to President Jimmy Carter; and emphasized the important work done by Planned Parenthood. "Planned Parenthood has, and continues to lead the fight for women’s reproductive freedoms," Weddington said.
"What a lovely event. We are truly grateful to Sarah Weddington, Lizz Winstead and all guests for the outpouring of support they showed PPSNE at the Annual Spring Luncheon," said Judy Tabar President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. "With their support, PPSNE will continue to provide the high quality, nonjudgmental care our patients truly deserve."
A personal connection to Planned Parenthood was described by the event host Lizz Winstead. Known for her comedy and wit, Winstead, the co-creator of "The Daily Show," shared her personal story of how Planned Parenthood was there when she needed them and she kept the audience entertained for a wonderful and fulfilling afternoon. Winstead thanked Planned Parenthood for all they do for women, men and young people every day.
Additionally, the Community Impact Award was presented to Near and Far Aid Association of Fairfield, Conn. The all-volunteer fundraising and fund-granting group supports various projects in an effort to eliminate the causes and effects of poverty in Fairfield County.
All proceeds from the Annual Spring Luncheon go directly to care for PPSNE patients who receive high quality health care, regardless of their ability to pay. Annually, PPSNE serves over 70,000 women, men and young people, providing a range of critical, life-saving health care services, including breast cancer screenings, Pap tests, birth control, and STD/STI testing and treatment.
