At Planned Parenthood, we offer outpatient surgical abortion and medication abortion services. The Abortion Care Team at Planned Parenthood is honored to provide the health care you need and we are here to answer any questions you have!

Bring these items with you:

  • Valid government or state-issued photo ID
  • Insurance card (if you plan to use insurance)
  • Co-pay or payment for your visit. Please note if you are using a credit card with someone else’s name on it, that person must be present during the transaction. If you have questions about forms of payment, please call our office at 1800-230-PLAN.
  • If you are a minor, bring your original birth certificate in addition to your photo ID.  Photo IDs can include a current school year ID (or badge) or a government issued photo ID. Parents or legal guardians must be present with their government or state issued photo ID. Legal guardians require additional paperwork, please call our office for details at 1-800-230-PLAN.
  • List of medications
  • Your pharmacy information

Keep these items in mind:

  • Abortion is not covered by Ohio State Medicaid under most circumstances, and many private insurers exclude abortion services from being covered. If you'd like to use your private insurance for abortion services, we recommend you call your insurance and ask if elective abortions are covered under your plan at our center.
  • It is always our goal to be mindful of your time, but for planning purposes, please prepare to plan your day around your visits. You could spend anywhere between 2.5-3.5 hours at each appointment.
The Consultation Appointment

Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for parking and check-in. You can now complete most of the registration process through MyChart pre-check up to 7 days before your visit. To help move through your visit faster, complete the pre-check before you arrive for your visit.

You will give your ID to the front desk staff before you are able to enter any part of the building. We will not be able to see you if you do not have a valid government or state ID.

During check-in, a care team member will make a copy of your insurance card, if you plan on using insurance. Sometimes the name on your ID or insurance card won’t match each other or may not match the name you go by – that’s ok. Just let the staff member know when you arrive.

During your visit, we will collect urine for gonorrhea and chlamydia testing and a small blood sample.  You will have an ultrasound done to determine gestational age. An educator will go over all of your options, review any state requirements or abortion laws, then schedule your next appointment. Some patients may be able to have their consultation and abortion on the same day. Contact a Patient Navigator to discuss your options.

Finally, a physician will sign state mandated consents and go over the procedure with you, answering any questions you may have. They will discuss birth control options (if you’re interested) and provide any resources or referrals you may need.

Once your visit is complete, you will proceed to the check-out desk. Don’t forget your ID at the front desk before you leave the building.

Surgical Abortion

Keep in mind you may be at our center for 2.5 – 3.5 hours for your surgery appointment. Bring a phone charger, wear loose and comfortable clothing, and wear underwear. Please feel free to eat before your procedure, unless otherwise directed by a nurse or physician.

A surgical abortion is a simple medical procedure and is very safe. Sedation options are available, ask a care team member for more information. Recovery time can vary from person to person.

Our staff will support you throughout your visit. We also offer Abortion Doulas for those who may need emotional support during and after their procedure. Ask a member of our care team for more information about our Abortion Doula Program.

Medication Abortion

We offer medication abortion (aka “abortion pill”) up to 10.0 weeks based on our ultrasound exams, as long as no fetal heart tone is detected. There is a combination of 2 medications, mifepristone and misoprostol. Download a PDF overview of the abortion pill.

Doulas Are Here To Help

Items to keep in mind:

  • Do not use drugs or alcohol 24 hours prior to your appointment
  • Children are not able to accompany you to your appointments. NOTE: Due to COVID-19, only one guest is able to accompany you into the building at this time.
  • Sometimes, there are people that stand out front of our centers, they do not work for us, and you do not have to stop for them.  Please notify a staff member if you have any problems.
  • If you have not received a link to your MyChart account one day before your appointment, please contact us.

Notice of Ohio law regarding abortions related to Down syndrome and attestation [as required by O.R.C. 2919.10(B)]

It is LEGAL for you to get an abortion in Ohio for ANY REASON.

You do not have to tell us your reason. We do not need to know your reason.

Under Ohio law, however, our clinic is not allowed to perform an abortion if WE KNOW that fetal Down syndrome is any part of your reason. If we learn of a diagnosis or other indication of Down syndrome in your pregnancy, we will not be able to see you.

This applies only to Down syndrome and not any other condition.

After Your Appointment

Many patients are able to return to normal activities the day after their abortion. Your care team will review what you can expect in the days and weeks following your abortion before you leave our health center. If you have additional questions or concerns, call the number provided on your discharge papers.

It is normal to experience a variety of different emotions after an abortion. Some people may feel sad, while others feel relieved. No matter how you are feeling, there are mental health resources available to help you process:

o    Exhale
o    Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice
o    All Options (formerly Blackline)
o    Connect and Breathe

I had an abortion in another state, but I need post-op care.

If you traveled out of state for an abortion and need to receive post-abortion care at our health centers, we can help.

Call 513-287-6488 to schedule an appointment.

What if I change my mind?

You are the only person who can decide if an abortion is right for you. If you change your mind during one of your appointments, let a member of our staff know. They will discuss your options and provide resources to help with your next steps.

Remember, no one can force you to have an abortion.  If someone is coercing, threatening, or forcing you to have an abortion, tell our care team immediately.

What if I'm not sure about having an abortion?

Making the decision to continue a pregnancy, become a parent or have an abortion can be difficult.  At Planned Parenthood, we believe you should be empowered to make informed private decisions about your reproductive life.  We have staff who are trained to provide options counseling to anyone who is unsure about their pregnancy options.

During options counseling, our team will go into detail about the options available to you. They will also discuss your support system and provide resources for continuing your pregnancy, parenting, and more.  To schedule an options counseling session, call 513-287-6488.

What if I'm having a miscarriage? Can you help me?

If you think you are having a miscarriage - or if you come in for a consultation and we discover you are having a miscarriage - we can help.

Miscarriage care is similar to an abortion consultation. You will meet with an educator who will discuss your treatment and follow up options, as well as sign a surgical consent.  The procedure itself is exactly the same as an abortion procedure.
