WHAT: Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood (UHPP) will celebrate 80 years of delivering quality healthcare that reflects our patients’ aspiration to live in healthy families and communities.
WHO: Standup comedy veteran Susie Essman will accept UHPP’s inaugural Giraffe Award for sticking out her neck to defend abortion and reproductive rights. “I really don’t like people telling me what to do with my body. And I feel like women are so marginalized. There’s still such an intense patriarchy in our lives. It’s still a struggle and a fight. And this is one example that’s so deeply personal.”
Essman has played Susie Greene for all eight seasons of the hit HBO comedy series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Essman feels that Susie Greene is popular with fans because of “her complete and total comfort with her anger. Women are taught not to be angry. Susie gives people a certain sense of freedom, especially women.”
Starting around 7 p.m., Essman will sign copies of her book, “What Would Susie Say?: Bullsh*t Wisdom About Love, Life and Comedy” (2010).
WHEN: Thursday, October 23, 2014, 6-9 p.m. About 200 guests are expected.
WHERE: Sixty State Place, 60 State Street, Albany, NY
