Mirena IUD for Emergency Contraception

The Mirena IUD is a hormonal IUD that can be used for emergency birth control. If you have had unprotected sex in the last 5 days (120 hours), this is one of the most effective options for emergency contraception.

You may qualify for this study if you are:

  • Between 16-35 years old and want a hormonal IUD placed.

  • Willing to complete regular text message surveys for 1-month after your IUD placement.

  • Complete a urine pregnancy test result one month after IUD placement.

Implant for Emergency Contraception

The Nexplanon implant is a thin, matchstick-sized plastic rod that’s implanted under the skin of your upper arm and releases a small amount of hormones to prevent pregnancy. We are currently studying this as an option for emergency contraception.

You may qualify for this study if you are:

  • Between 18-35 years old and have had unprotected sex in the last 3 days (72 hours).
  • Want an implant placed.

  • Willing to complete text message surveys for 1- month after your implant is placed.

  • Complete a urine pregnancy test result one month after placement.
